Off the Shelf

expatriates-1

Exclaimed as the next great book club “read” I wanted to like this book. I really, really did.It hooked me in the beginning, but as the story of Hilary, Margaret and Mercy unfolded, I found that I was getting more and more depressed about the whole situation!

The book does deal with the day to day descriptions of life in Hong Kong as the bored, non working spouses of American ( or other nationalities) workers who are transplanted because of their jobs. It talks about the American club, the absolute wall of noise of the city, the different districts. But it is not a travel guide and deals with a major family tragedy and the aftermath for all characters.

I give it a solid B. Wait for it from the library.
